Description:

GERMAN MAP AND DOCUMENT SET FOR INVASION OF NORTHEAST AFRICA
'Militargeographische Beschreibung von Nordost-Afrika' ('Military Geographical Description of Northeast Africa'), a superb set of maps and a bound pictorial and textual reference book with protective cardboard slipcase, prepared to inform and educate German military officers before and during the German invasion of northeast Africa, principally Egypt. This geographical area would have been the purview of Gen. Erwin Rommel and the Afrika Korps under his command. The book and maps were published in Belin by the General Staff of the Army, Department for War Maps and Surveying (IV. Mil.-Geo.), 1940. Included are: six large, folded and highly-detailed maps showing roads, railroads, individual buildings, government facilities, etc. of the cities and ports of Cairo, Alexandria, Zagazig, Qena, Port Said and Port Fouad, and Beni Suef. Interestingly, the maps also show the locations of synagogues. Also present is a 298pp. 8vo. accompanying 'Text and Image Booklet'. This fascinating work includes textual information on all principal Egyptian cities and towns, roads, route information, etc., adding information on transit from Libya, including Tobruk. Half of the book is dedicated to photographs showing the horrendous roads, oases, waypoints, cities and towns, etc. An additional 12 fold-out maps are bound within, including airfields and routes east from Tripoli, Benghazi, oases, and the British oilfields at Hurghada. The entirety is presented in a brown cardboard imprinted case, now a bit ragged, contents being in generally fine condition. On 6 February 1941, Rommel was appointed commander of the Afrika Korps. He would be heavily engaged in Egypt, in the First and Second Battles of El Alamein, just west of Alexandria. His defeat in the second battle, Nov. 11, 1942, led to the eventual end of German designs on North Africa. This map set is very similar to those prepared for the invasions of England (Operation Sea Lion), but much rarer. Sold with three unrelated German maps showing the Red Sea coast of Egypt, the islands off eastern Estonia, and a general commercial military map of Europe (damaged).
