Description:

GERMAN M42 HELMET WITH "CHICKEN WIRE" BASKET
Scarce German M42 helmet, identifiable as such by its embossed, rather than riveted vents and its lack of a rolled rim. The helmet is finished a very dark blue-black inside and out, with the faintest traces of a decal barely visible beneath the vent on the left-hand side. Interestingly, the dome of the helmet is criss-crossed by two strands of wire, affixed to a third band of wire around the circumference of the helmet, with the entire assemblage hooked over the rim. This arrangement allowed the wearer to camouflage his helmet with foliage. The rear interior skirt is stamped "2239", with the size-stamp "ET 62" at the left-hand side, indicating manufacture by the Eisenhuttenwerke at Thale. An eight-fingered brown leather liner is fitted to a zinc band affixed to the interior with three split-pin rivets, and a brown leather chin strap, with the tongue marked "RBN" followed by an indecipherable nine-digit code, is also fitted. The exterior of the helmet shows small rust spots spread over the entire surface, becoming more prominent beneath the wire basket, with some flaking to the finish, especially at the rear. The liner shows wear and flaking, with three fingers showing tears to the eyelet holes for the adjustment cord, while the chin strap shows some cracking but remains supple. Very good overall.
