Description:

Pair of 1944 German Kriegsmarine black binoculars, 7 x 9 in., with original case, good optics. These 7 x 50 binoculars bear the marking ‘beh' on the left barrel indicating the maker as Ernst Leitz. The left barrel also has a rubber piece over the top serving as a protective case for the lens. The black leather case, 8.5 x 11.5 in., bears an engraved German national eagle gripping a swastika on the lid and is also stamped ‘M' indicating they are for members of the kriegsmarine. Very good condition. This lot is accompanied by a New York Times article, 1p. folio, Sep. 3, 1939, the day Britain and France declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland only two days prior. The article is brief serving as support for the large map of Europe which details fortifications, naval bases and blockades and known locations of German ships. Presented in a 20.5 x 26.5 in. wooden frame displaying a scalloped design. The paper is chipped throughout, slightly intruding on the text at the bottom left. Overall, very good. This lot was received by us from the estate of Lt. Col. Bion Welker through his granddaughter. BION WELKER (1894-1981) was a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel who convinced 350 SS troops to surrender in Paris without a shot. He accompanied British forces into the city of Bremen where he also served as military governor from 1945-1946.
