Description:

GERMAN JEW'S IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS
Good pair of Third Reich identification documents, both belonging to Erwin Stein, a German Jew and veteran of World War I. Includes: Partly-printed D.S., 3pp. 12mo., Aug. 7, 1944, a "kennkarte" ("identity card"), bearing a large letter "J" on the front cover, indicating that the holder is Jewish. The interior bear's Stein's signature, adding the derogatory and compulsory middle name "Israel", with his identity photo and thumbprints. A notation in Russian appears at the bottom of the second page, bearing the date "1946", indicating that Stein survived the war. WITH: Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., May 16, 1944, an "ausschliessungsschein" ("expulsion order"), removing Stein from consideration for military service due to his Jewish background and injuries sustained during World War I. This document also features Stein's identity photo, as well as the notation "Judensache" ("Jewish question"). Both documents show folds as issued, with expected wear, else very good. Also present is a typed statement, 6pp. 4to., unsigned but apparently drafted by Stein's wife, who goes unnamed, but who by the context of the statement appears to be Aryan. The statement chronicles the family's experiences through the Holocaust and seems to indicate that Stein himself was somehow shielded from early deportation efforts by virtue of his marriage to an Aryan and his status as a wounded war veteran. Towards the end of World War II, the family is ordered to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp but manages to escape this fate by hiding in an abandoned house. An acquaintance of theirs, and NSDAP official, manages to get them sent to Breslau and put to work shoring up fortifications there, in the face of the Russian advance. Postwar, they apparently flee to Poland. Further research into this subject would certainly prove fruitful.
