Description:

GERMAN DLV GLIDER PILOT'S DAGGER
A rare Third Reich dagger, a ‘Fliegermesser' (‘Flyer's Knife') issued to personnel of the ‘Deutscher Luftsportverband' (German Air Sports Association), or DLV, an organization established by the NSDAP to covertly train combat glider pilots while adhering to the limitations on air force personnel imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. The weapon, 6.75 in. blade, 12in. overall, features an aluminum pommel and swept wing cross guard, securing a grip covered with finely-grained blue leather. A black painted mobile swastika is inset into each side of the cross guard at center. The blade and cross guard are separated by a blue leather washer. The double-edge blade bears the maker's mark ‘F & A Helbig, Steinbach KRM'. The pommel shows appreciable wear, while the cross guard shows just a few spots of slight wear and a few scratches. The grip wrapping shows a few small dings, the blade showing just trace running marks and negligible dark spots, with most at the tip. The knife is housed in a steel scabbard painted blue to match the grip, and with aluminum drag and throat indicating post-1937 production. It is suspended from a short brown leather hanger with a spring clasp, attached to a single ring at the throat of the scabbard. The top of the throat is stamped with the insignia of the DLV, intersecting the blade slot. Fittings show some dings and wear but are overall good. A rare find!
