Description:

GERMAN BAYONET AND SCABBARD RECOVERED ON KWAJALEIN
A very curious relic from Kwajalein Atoll, a German Model 1891 'MODELO ARGENTINO 1891' bayonet, 20.25 in. long overall, the reverse of the blade reading: 'WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM & CO., SOLINGEN'. The grip is of some type of bakelite or similar composite, fitting oxidized, as is the blade which still retains a sharp edge. Accompanied by a metal scabbard, likely matching, some yellow paint remaining, jury-rigged with rice string and cord to fashion a belt loop. The Germans manufactured some equipment for Japanese forces, certainly including this bayonet. Found on Kwajalein, site of a major s invasion by the 7th U.S. Army Division, by our consignor in the 1970s. Sold with his letter of provenance.
