Description:

GERMAN ARMY 1940 INVASION OF FRANCE MAPS AND CITY INFORMATION
A rare set of German military-issue maps and booklet issued in connection with the anticipated invasion of France undertaken by Germany commencing on May 10, 1940. All of the publications were issued under the name of the General Staff of the German Army, Berlin, and concern a 'Military Geographical description of France...Central France (left of the Seine)...', including Paris. Present is a 118pp. 8vo. bound book describing primary geographical features including rivers and their crossings, brief descriptions of all major towns and cities, and a lengthy section of photographs including factories, bridges, airports, canals, fords, etc., all important to any invading force. Also present are maps issued with this packet, including: a map showing all of the major rivers in central France and the types of crossings along their runs, with a very detailed inset map of the Seine as it runs through Paris, those bridges indicated as well (41 x 33 in.); four maps showing the crucial industrial cities of Rouen, Nantes, and perhaps 15 other important towns and cities along the Seine and Atlantic coast detailing every factory and manufacturer in each location and the types of goods produced thereat (obviously published with the intention of converting the factories to war-related production) each map about 40 x 31 in.; a 40 x 27 in. map showing telephone and telegraph lines from Paris to locations throughout the region; a highly-detailed 34 x 34 in. topographical map of northeast France including Dunkirk, Dieppe and Le Havre to Strasbourg and Muhlhausen; a smaller topographical map showing forested areas about Paris, and a sheet listing the contents of the packet. The maps and booklet are packed within a heavy printed cardboard case. Overall near fine. Similar collections were issued by the Wehrmacht in anticipation of the invasions of Russia, Poland and the U.K. - this is the first such set we have seen issued for France.
