Description:

(GERMAN-AMERICAN) CIVIL WAR PAPERS OF HENRY OSTERHELD, 68TH NEW YORK INFANTRY
Large archive of approx. 70 documents, printed and manuscript, related to the Civil War service of Henry Osterheld, a lieutenant with the 68th New York Volunteer Infantry, a largely German-American unit which saw heavy action at Second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and more. The collection includes a partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, Lookout Valley, Tennessee, Nov. 21, 1863, a certificate appointing Osterheld First Sergeant of Company F of the 68th. The certificate is signed at bottom by the regiment''s commanding major and its adjutant. The collection further includes many pieces of correspondence, including orders directing Osterheld to take charge of various engineering projects; many muster and pay rolls and supply lists; postwar correspondence related to Osterheld''s campaign to secure a full pension; a certificate appointing him Horsekeeper of Customs in New York, and much else. Many of these papers bear the signatures of officers of Osterheld''s regiment. Certainly worthy of further research.
