Description:

GERMAN-AMERICAN BUND POSTCARD
Rare promotional postcard, 4.25 x 6 in., shows a man standing in Brownshirt uniform with Nazi armband before a mobile swastika, looking up at an American shield. The bottom bears the motto: 'For liberty and truth we fight / With words and deeds and song'. The verso is imprinted (in German): 'Friends of New Germany 1. Gau Day of Gaus OST 17-18 Nov. 1934 in Brooklyn' and is stamped with the name of the issuer: 'EFDENDE 267 Nicholas Avenue Brooklyn...' Some mounting remnants on the verso, else very good. It was the Efdende Organization - Efdende being the German acronym for 'Friends of the New Germany,' and that New Germany being the Third Reich. It was one of the headquarters of the many German-American Nazis and their supporters living in Queens and Brooklyn. On April 8, 1934, a group of more than 5,000 American Nazis and sympathizers met nearby at an arena to call for a 'boycott against the boycotters,' meaning a boycott of Jewish merchants who stood against Hitler.
