Description:

Lot of twenty-three pieces of German paper currency in 20, 25, 50, and 75 denominations, nearly all printed in 1921. During World War I, German silver coins were hoarded as their value as silver exceeded their face value. At war's ended, almost no silver coins remained in circulation making ‘small change' unobtainable. As a solution, about 3,900 population centers issued ‘notgeld', or ‘emergency money': paper money of various pfennig denominations. The notes, issued until 1922, are now collected for their beautiful, colorful designs. Conditions vary slightly, overall very good. This lot was received by us from the estate of Lt. Col. Bion Welker through his granddaughter. BION WELKER (1894-1981), a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel who convinced 350 SS troops to surrender in Paris without a shot. Accompanied British forces into the city of Bremen where he also served as military governor from 1945-1946.
