(1875 - 1953) German field marshal who led the blitzkrieg attack on France, seizing the country within two weeks, defeated by Allied forces in Normandy and in the desperate Battle of the Bulge. Typed D.S. by Rundstedt's wife Editha, 4p. 4to., Hanover, Feb. 28, 1953, a transcript of words spoken at the funeral service of Rundstedt by a Dr. Strasser, in part: 'Dear mourners, General Field Marshall Von Rundstedt has died. In deep sorrow we gather around his body. You his relatives are not the only ones who suffer for he who has died. It is as if old Germany wanted to gather around him at this hour, first and foremost we old soldiers, who wore the gray coat under him in honor...Bearing in mind the great merits that the deceased earned for our fatherland, bearing in mind the bitter sufferings that we endured with others, and remembering the exemplary simplicity of his being and nobility of his character'. SOLD WITH: a 5 x 6 in. funeral announcement card, a 3.5 x 2.5 in. b/w photo of Rundstedt with an untranslated inscription on the back, and a 6 x 4 in. untranslated signed postcard from his wife to a collector. All in fine condition. Four items.
