Description:

GERD VON RUNDSTEDT'S FIELD MARSHAL'S SHOULDER BOARD
GERD VON RUNDSTEDT (1875 – 1953) German field marshal who led the blitzkrieg attack on France, seizing the country within two weeks, defeated by Allied forces in Normandy and in the desperate Battle of the Bulge. An exceptional war relic, attributed to a tunic once worn by Gerd von Rundstedt, his field marshal's shoulder board, 4.25 x 1.5 in., made in the first pattern design with woven gold and silver thread. Sitting atop are crossed field marshal batons with swastikas held by the national eagles which have been meticulously filed off de ‘de-nazify' the piece. Above the batons is the number ‘18' in gold, indicating the regiment von Rundstedt commanded in the Reichswehr. The shoulder board is not lined in the typical red, as von Rundstedt opted for a white lining to match the simple general's tunic he would often wear. Moderately soiled, otherwise very good. Rundstedt was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in 1940. At that point he was seriously considering retirement, but Hitler then gave him command of Army Group South during the invasion of the Soviet Union, which saw the largest encirclement in the war at the Battle of Kiev. After his time in the east, he would venture west and be put in command for the defense of western Europe.
