Description:

(1913 - 2006) 38th President of the United States who assumed office upon the resignation of Richard Nixon, who Ford later pardoned for any involvement in the Watergate scandal. Outstanding content T.L.S on House Minority Leader letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 8, 1970, to a union member 'Larry' about the Vietnam War. In part: 'As you know, President Nixon shares your view that we must protect our American troops in Vietnam and get them home as rapidly as possible. Over 105,000 troops have been withdrawn from Vietnam since Mr. Nixon has become President. He has promised to withdraw another 150,000 by next spring....As you know, the action in Cambodia was aimed at further protecting our troops and our allies in Vietnam. I am sure you share the President's concern with the Communist sanctuaries in that country. I have endorsed the President's position and sincerely hope that this action will result in shortening the war and enabling a more prompt withdrawal of our troops...' He signs 'Jerry Ford' at the conclusion in blue ink. Fine condition. Of course, Ford was selected as Nixon's Vice President after his predecessor, Spiro Agnew, resigned after charges of bribery, tax evasion and money laundering. America's 1970 invasion of Cambodia - officially a neutral country - has sparked hefty controversy. Supporters of the invasion cite the 40,000 Viet Cong troops taking refuge in the eastern border regions of Cambodia, yet detractors have criticized the expansion of the war beyond Vietnam, as well as the secrecy with which the administration had ordered these unauthorized bombings.
