Description:

GERALD CHAPMAN "WANTED" FLYER
GERALD CHAPMAN (1887 - 1926) "The Gentleman Bandit", American criminal who co-led an early Prohibition-era gang with George "Dutch" Anderson from 1919 until the mid-1920s. Chapman was the first criminal to be dubbed "Public Enemy Number One" by the press. Executed with an "upright jerker" for the murder of a Connecticut policeman. Rare wanted poster issued by J. Edgar Hoover's office in the Justice Dept., Aug. 16, 1923 and bearing two mugshots of Chapman, sets forth his physical description, the fact that he had escaped confinement twice, and offers $500 for his capture. Accompanied by a Justice Dept. form letter, Jan. 19, 1925 announcing Chapman's capture. Very good.
