Description:

Scarce printed document in French, 2pp. 4to., Paris, Aug. 20, 1792, an official printing of a decree passed by the "Assemblee Nationale", stating that "...it lifts the suspension of the execution of a decree which declares that Arthur Dillon had lost the confidence of the nation..." The publication of the decree is then dictated, and the order bears the printed signature of GEORGES DANTON (1759-1794), the de facto head of the French state following the fall of the monarchy, and who was eventually guillotined as a moderate during the Reign of Terror. Lightly toned at the edges, disbound from a book, with a contemporary identifying inscription in French at the top right of the first page, and with the later pencil inscription "Danton (griffe)", using a French term identifying the signature as being printed. ARTHUR DILLON (1750-1794) was an English-born general of the French Army. Although he remained in military service following the decree of loss of confidence presented here, he was arrested and accused of participation in a prison conspiracy in 1793, and was guillotined in 1794, only eight days after Danton.
