Description:

(GEORGE WASHINGTON)
An interesting relic, an 11" x 17" relief sculpture hand-carved from a mahogany slab 3/4" thick, signed on verso: "J. PoKoro Sr." This plaque is dated 1939, the 150th anniversary of Washington's inauguration. It is a copy of an original statue of Washington by Alexander Sterling Calder that appears on the Washington Arch in Washington Square Park, New York City. This highly-detailed carving is replete with symbolism, notably an eagle overhead, Washington's family motto "Exitus Acta Probat" (The end justifies the means), with Washington standing between "Justice" and "Fortitude", each of which bears appropriate symbols such as a laurel wreath, scales, and so forth. Worthy of further research, overall good condition.
