Description:

GEORGE WASHINGTON
(1732 - 1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Rare and unusual A.N.S. as President, 1p. sm. oblong 8vo., "Wednesday, 16th Mar 1796", signed in the text as "the President", presenting a cameo of himself to Mrs. Walter Stewart. In his typically refined and modest manner Washington writes, in full: "Not for the representation, or the value, but because it is the production of a fair lady, the President takes the liberty in presenting the enclosed, with his best regards, to Mrs. Stewart, praying her acceptance of it...". The cameo was Madame de Brehan's miniature portrait of a Grecian-styled portrait of Washington. Quite toned at margins, corners rounded, expertly restored, overall very good. Presented in cream matting with a copy of the cameo and a brass biographical plaque. Framed in gilt, and most attractive for display. Not examined out of frame.
