Description:

GEORGE WASHINGTON
(1732 - 1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. An extraordinary piece, a franked address panel signed as President, sent to the eminent portrait artist CHARLES WILLSON PEALE (1741-1827). The 6 1/4 x 3 1/2" address panel is franked "Free Go: Washington" at lower left and additional addressed in Washington's hand, "Mr Chas. W. Peale Philadelphia." Additionally, Peale's son, REMBRANDT PEALE (1778-1860) has added his signature as part of an inscription: "Presented to Mr. Thomas Herring by Rembrandt Peale 1787" The elder Peale, an accomplished artist and founder of one of America's first museums, is perhaps best known for his portraits of George Washington. Washington sat for Peale six times in his life beginning in 1772. His son Rembrandt, who studied under the elder's Peale tutelage (together with John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart) was also acclaimed for his portraits of Washington, one of which he painted from life in 1795. A superb association piece. Simply matted with an equestrian engraving of Washington. Usual folds, light soiling, else fine condition.
