(GEORGE WALTON) POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR THE REPOSSESSION OF A SLAVE
GEORGE WALTON (1749-1804) Signer of the Declaration of Independence for Georgia, and also its second Governor. Good content manuscript D.S. (not signed by Walton), involving Walton as judge in the recovery of a slave and her children. The document, 1p. 4to., Burke County, GA, Feb. 6, 1789, a power of attorney document, drafted by a Thomas Wyche, allowing his "friend and relation" Peter Wyche to act in his stead to: "... ask, demand, Recover and Receive of and from Colo. Elijah Isaacs ... or any other person or persons that may have in possession a Certain Negro Woman Named Dol and her increase if any she have which Said Negro was feloniously plundered and stole from me..." The document is secured inside a paper folder with a cloth ribbon, and is further signed by Francis Pugh as a witness. The front of the folder bears the inscription, in part: "Georgia, By the Honorable George Walton Esquire, Captain General Governor and Commander in Chief in and over this said state ... Know Ye that Francis Pugh Esquire who hath witnessed the due execution of the annexed Power of Attorney is one of the Justices assigned to keep the peace in the County of Burke in the said state..." Considerable chipping at the edges, affecting some of the text, some damp stains causing lightening of the text, some toning and foxing throughout, else very good.
