Description:

GEORGE W. GORDON
(1836 – 1911) Confederate brigadier general, led a brigade at Franklin where he was wounded, later a founder of the Ku Klux Klan. War-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Nashville, Tennessee, Dec. 28, 1861, to his wife. In part: ‘...I have been here two days upon business for the military service. I came up from Clarksville in a hurry and I have been in a hurry ever since. I have nearly walked myself off of my legs...received a short note from you also which was very acceptable in the common as it was the first and only direct word I had received from you and home since I left...I heard through Mr. [?] that he dined with you and Laura...I envied him that pleasure...it may be a long time before I have that pleasure. I will go to see you whenever I can be relieved from duty long enough to spend a little time with you and our dear children...I have a wretched cold...I have turned out my beard whiskers and mustache. But how long they will stay turned out I can't now tell – For I feel very filthy above the mouth and they itch and annoy me exceedingly...I wish I could see and embrace my dear little wife this good night...perchance dreams of word and rumors of wars and maybe of one once near and dear to her on earth, and for whose safety and welfare she yet prays for, hoping that he may be again returned to his family after the toils and dangers of the long campaign...Please write me...' His somewhat faded signature ‘G.W. Gordon' is at the conclusion. Wrinkled throughout, some spots of soiling, not affecting the signature.
