Description:

(1884-1962) American poet, propagandist and Germanophile; an early supporter of Hitler and general apologist for Nazism, convicted in 1942 for failing to register as a Nazi agent. Important A.Q.S. signed in full, 1p. 4to., "District Jail", Dec. 19, 1941. While in jail and awaiting trial for his failure to register as a German agent, Viereck pens a 14-line poem he has titled "Farewell to Marriage Sonnet in Jail". In part: "No sweeter rosebud bloomed in brush or briar, / Not Holy Ghost, nor Cytherean dove / Was whiter than the kisses of my Love, / Half sprite, half child, sprung from no mundane mire...Gone is the pagan shamelessness divine / That even of our bodies made a sacred shrine. / Elf child no more, but mistress without mercy / Her heart no dream of eerie beauty..." Very good. Viereck had married Margaret"Gretchen" Edith Hein in 1915 and she bore him two sons, one of whom died in action at Anzio. Viereck would remain in prison until 1947.
