Description:

GEORGE S. PATTON
AN EARLY PATTON LETTER REVEALS HIS FEARS ABOUT THE POOR STATE OF THE AMERICAN ARMY Revealing A.L.S. "George S. Patton, Jr.", 6pp. 8vo., [n.p., likely Ft. Sheridan, Il.], Oct. 17, 1910 to his mother, Ruth Wilson Patton. Second Lieutenant Patton had graduated from West Point six months earlier and was at this time attached to the 15th Cavalry. He opens his letter discussing football: "...Last night I was too stiff to write as a result of playing football..." and mentions West Point: "...if I had played the game there as I do now I would have made the team...". He continues: "...But to Hell with 'ifs' I made expert pistol shot last week but that is very long to do... We are going out to camp... so that we can comply with Gen. [Leonard] Woods' newest notion to be inspected in the field... it is all a mere nuisance... Our whole military system is a might more a sort of pretext which a palsied national spirit puts up high... They salve their consciences by saying 'we have an army'... but they will wake up some day and I hope it will be sooner than later... The other day I came thirty miles at night on a new road in an hour and five minutes... in one town they tried to stop me... I was late for dinner and new B would be worried..." Folds, else fine condition.
