Description:

GEORGE ROBINSON, THE SAVIOR OF WILLIAM E. SEWARD
A commemorative Congressional medal honoring GEORGE FOSTER ROBINSON (d. 1907), attendant to William H. Seward and a guest at Ford's Theater on the fateful night of Apr. 14, 1865. After John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln, his co-conspirator Lewis Payne made for Seward's home and burst in about 10:00 PM, thence stabbing Seward. Robinson jumped on the would-be assassin, who stabbed him in the back and escaped. However, Payne was captured shortly thereafter and hanged on July 7, 1865. Ironically not much is known of Robinson despite his being a hero that night; however he enlisted in Company B of the 8th Me. Vols Infy. and was wounded at the Battle of Petersburg. After convalescing in Washington hospitals for a year, Robinson was named attendant to Seward. He was awarded the Congressional Medal in 1871. This fine medal measures 77mm in diameter and 8mm thick, and bears the side-profile bust of Robinson, with the legend: "For his heroic conduct on this 14 day of April 1865 in saving the life of Wm. H. Seward then Secretary of State...". On verso is a detailed bas-relief scene of Robinson fighting off Payne while the injured Seward looks on. Fine condition.
