GEORGE PEABODY
(1795 - 1869) American merchant and philanthropist, used his credit to support American credit abroad after the Panic of 1837, founder of the Peabody Institute and Peabody Museum. Rare financial content A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Baltimore, May 14, 1816, to Elisha Riggs, Esq. in George Town, in part: "...Inclosed I hand you Jos. C. Hall's note [not present] at 90 days from 1st May for $601.85 Cents, which I wish you to present to him for discount at 1 pr Ct per month those of Clark & Decraft, & Brashears...The goods from Georgetown have all arrived safe - the bill I hope to receive tomorrow - as also some remittances from you, as I have about 2500$ to pay on Thursday, and have at present none on hand, having used the drafts etc, brought from Georgetown, for to meet other payments - The most I could possibly obtain for drafts on Philadelphia was - 3-1/2 pr Ct - I know a person who purchased 10,000$ to day at 3...Since my return the Franklin has arrived, and has on board Four Cases of Buttons Adress'd to us, amounting as pr Invoice to about 230? - There is something very singular in this business - you inform'd me that you know nothing of them - and I have given no order, except for two cases for the fall, when Mr. Halliday was here last - I shall enter them, and write Mr Halliday on the subject - I made application at the Union Bank to day, but could not prevail on them to receive Bank of Columbia, or any other Distant paper on deposit - I paid a bond of yours to day for 160$ - which amount you will please to remit - Drafts on New York at 9-1/2 - 10 pr Ct advance - unless I receive from you some New York money by Wednesdays Mail, it is probably I shall have to allow 10 pr Ct on V.J. Givens note 2500$ - The whole sales during my absence 4 days was not 200$...". Toned, small seal tear from opening, a bit fragile but in good condition.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyer's should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. Customer's who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
