GEORGE MILLER STERNBERG
(1838-1915) American physician in Medical Corps of the U.S. Army, serving under General Sykes in the Army of the Potomac; participated in the battle of First Bull Run where he was taken prisoner. In 1893, he was named U.S. Surgeon General. Fine T.L.S. "Geo. M. Sternberg" as Surgeon General, 1p. 4to., "War Department, Surgeon General's Office", Washington, Mar. 10, 1898, written on the verso of a letter from Charles Keller, 1st Lieut., Corps of Engineers, Rock Island, Ill. in answer to his request about how to pay a civilian physician employed by an Army officer, in part: "…Blank forms No. 26, are enclosed [no longer present] on which accounts for medical services rendered to officers or enlisted men on duty... should be prepared in duplicate. Such accounts may either be paid by the officer to whom the services are rendered, in which case he is entitled to reimbursements by the Government, or the account may be rendered in favor of the physician who rendered the services, to whom payment will then be made...". Light soiling at folds, otherwise in very good condition.
