Description:

GEORGE IV
(1762 - 1830) King of England who became Prince Regent when George III became permanently deranged. Scarce Manuscript D.S. "George R" as King, 14pp. legal folio, Windsor Castle, July 24, 1826, signed at the top of the first page above embossed red-wax and white-paper royal seal, the sheets held together by black silk ribbon at the left margin, sent to the Chancellor of Great Britain, John, Lord Eldon, authorizing him to affix the Great Seal of Great Britain to "...an Instrument...containing a Commission constituting and appointing…Robert Francis Jameson… and…Joseph Egan… to be our Commissioners, and…Sir Christopher Robinson, Knight, Doctor in Civil Law, Our Advocate General, to be Our Commissioner of Arbitration, under and pursuant to a Convention between Us and Our Good Brother The King of Spain concluded and signed at Madrid on the Twelfth day of March 1823…". On the concluding 11 pages are the details, in English, of the mission of the Crown's Attorney and Commissioners in investigating and seeking restitution in connection with "complaints respecting the Capture and detention of British Vessels and Property by Spanish Authorities", crimes committed in opposition to the "declaration of Peace between England and Spain", signed on July 4, 1808. An unusual and historic official document relating to a broken treaty that originated at the beginning of Napoleon's Peninsular War (1808-13), when Great Britain was attempting to gain a foothold on the Continent through subsidized alliances with foreign powers. Minor soiling with light toning, otherwise in very good condition.
