Description:

GEORGE III
(1738-1820) King of England during the American Revolution, it was his policies of taxation and repression that led to the uprisings in the Colonies. Manuscript D.S. "George R" as King, 5pp. legal folio, St. James's, Sept.3, 1807. To the Chancellor of Great Britain, John, Lord Eldon, authorizing him to affix the Great Seal of Great Britain to "...an Instrument...containing Our Power to Our Trusty and Well beloved Anthony Merry Esquire, authorizing and empowering him to treat and agree with the Minister or Ministers of Our Good Brother The King of Denmark, upon all such matters and things as in Our said Instrument of Full Power are contained and expressed; And for so doing this shall be Your Warrant.…". The concluding three pages of the document are penned in Latin and contain the full particulars of Ambassador Merry's mission in Denmark. Written the year that the Danish fleet was seized by the English. The King of Denmark Christian VII (1749-1808) had married King George's sister Caroline Mathilda in 1766. Treated with coldness and neglect by Christian after the birth of their son, later King Frederick VI, she became involved in a love affair with court physician Struensee who became all-powerful in the palace. She was arrested in 1772 with Struensee who the King had beheaded. Caroline confessed her guilt, and was divorced by the Danish King. Christian, who had been brought up in childhood by a cruel and perverse tutor became depraved later in life and an imbecile. Becoming hopelessly insane in 1784, he relinquished control to Crown Prince Frederick, who ruled as regent from 1784 to 1808. An unusual document of George III with scarce family association. Light toning, otherwise in very good condition.
