Description:

GEORGE III
(1738-1820) King of England during the American Revolution, it was his policies of taxation and repression that led to the uprisings in the Colonies. Handsome Royal manuscript D.S. in English, Latin, and French, "George R" as King of England, 6pp. legal folio, St. James, May 19, 1808, authorizing John Lord Eldon, Chancellor of Great Britain to conclude a secret agreement between the United Kingdom and Ferdinand II (King of the Two Sicilies). This secret agreement was to be considered separate from the March 30th treaty guaranteeing Ferdinand a British Navy flotilla in case of attack by Napoleon. The secret agreement of May 19 promises, in part [from French]: "...It is declared by the present Article secret and separate which was stipulated in the Treaty signed today...for the payment of the Subsidy of twenty-five thousand pounds sterling [to Ferdinand II]...". An interesting example of Britain's willingness to spend its coffers in order to keep Napoleon at bay and Europe's other powers away from his table, with Foreign Secretary and future Prime Minister George Canning countersigning, a year before his famous duel with Lord Castlereagh. Tied in black ribbon with the Great Seal still intact, light folds, else fine.

Provenance: With Napoleon threatening all of Europe, King George makes a secret deal financing Ferdinand II
