Description:

(1738 - 1820) King of England during the American Revolution, it was his policies of taxation and repression that led to the uprisings in the Colonies. Partly-printed D.S. as King, 1p. sm. folio parchment, London, Apr. 15, 1776, the promotion of 'Richard St. George Mansergh to serve as Ensign...in our Fourth (or The King's Own) Regiment of Foot commanded by...Studholme Hodgson, Esqr, Lieutenant General...' Co-signed by GEORGE GERMAIN (1716-1785), Secretary of State for America in Lord North's cabinet during the Revolution. Boldly signed by the king at upper-left, his signature only slightly marred by a blot to the 'R'. Light toning in one area, usual folds, else very good, matted and framed in wood. When the Revolution began in 1774, the Fourth was sent to North America; over the next three years, it took part in numerous actions, including Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Long Island and the Battle of White Marsh in December 1777. During the Philadelphia campaign, St. George served as a lieutenant in the 52nd Regiment’s light infantry and fought at Cooch’s Bridge, Brandywine, Paoli, and Germantown. The severe head wound he received at Germantown halted his army career. One of the first casualties of the day when a gunshot fractured his skull, St. George was carried off the battlefield by a light infantry corporal and soon returned home to Ireland.
