Description:

GEORGE I
(1660 - 1727) King of England and the first of the house of Hanover who succeeded Queen Anne. His early years were disturbed by Jacobite plots against him, but he strengthened his hand following the conclusion of the Triple Alliance with France and Holland. Manuscript D.S. "George" as Prince Regent under Queen Anne, 1p. folio, the appointment of John Graydon to serve as Rear Admiral of the Blew Squadron, countersigned by GEORGE PARKE and with three paper seals attached. Folds, else fine condition, framed. Graydon commanded the "Saudadoes" at Bantry Bay in 1689 and the "Hampton Court" at Barfleur in 1692. As a flag officer during the War of the Spanish Succession, he took part in the British victory at Vigo Bay 1702 and was responsible for conveying the captured ships on the voyage home. He was commander-in-chief in the West Indies in 1703, the same year that he commanded an ill-fated attempt to take the French settlement of Placentia in Newfoundland.
