GEORGE GERSHWIN (1898 - 1937) American composer and songwriter in collaboration with his brother Ira, his works include "Porgy and Bess", "Rhapsody in Blue", and "An American in Paris". Great content T.L.S. "George Gershwin" on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Sep. 10 1937 to A. W. Greiner, head of Steinway Piano Company's Concert and Artist Department. In part: "...Sorry not to have answered your letter sooner, but I have been out of town with my new show, STRIKE UP THE BAND. For the next few weeks, I shall be exceedingly busy with a second show ["Funny Face"] which goes into rehearsal on Monday, and until that show has opened, I shall be unable to see your friend, Mr. [Fritz] Kreisler. I want to take this opportunity of thanking you for sending a piano to Long Branch , and to my house..." Fine. With lyrics written by brother Ira Gershwin, "Strike Up the Band" was the Gershwins' first fully integrated score for a book musical. The pit band was the Red Nichols Orchestra, which included Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, Jimmy Dorsey, and Jack Teagarden.
