Description:

GEORGE G. MEADE AND FAMILY
(1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. War date A.Q.S. on a blank page in the front of a souvenir album containing hundreds of samples of embossed and engraved monograms for letterheads and cards. Meade writes, quoting the first stanza of the poem "Violets" by John Moultrie (1799 - 1874): "'Under the green hedges after the snow, There do the dear little violets grow, Hiding their modest & beautiful heads, Under the hawthorn in soft mossy beds.' George G. Meade Philada. Sept. 6,/64". On the following page, his son GEORGE MEADE (b. 1843) adds his signature, "George Meade Capt & A.D.C.". The collection numbered 292 samples was amassed by one of George Meade's other sons: WILLIAM MEADE (1856 - c. 1891) who adds a penciled note at the end of the album noting "At two hundred & ninety two I gave the collection up at a very good job I do not believe I will ever take it up again...the book was given to me by my sister Sarah before she was married as you will see by the verse on the last page...". He adds two other signatures, one in the subsequent blank leaves, and again on the last page and rear pastedown together with a poem by SARAH WISE MEADE (b. 1851) who writes: "Sarah W. Meade is my name, Sarah Meade, it shall remain, Until I find some nice young man, And then I shall change it if I can...". The last page also bears a similar poem by HENRIETTA MEADE (1853 - 1944). The book also contains what may be the signature of one George Meade's grandchildren by his son George, MARGARETTA SERGEANT MEADE (d. 1879). The front blank flyleaf also includes an inscription to Sarah Meade from "...her friend J. M. Kennedy, September 2, 1864" but William proceeded to cross out "Sarah" and alter "her" to "his" making it his own! William confirms this again on the next page, altering Sarah's signature and adding his own beneath. Covers worn, spine frayed, most pages fairly clean and in overall very good condition.
