(1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A.L.S. adding rank as major general, 2pp. 4to., "Hd. Qrs. Dept. of the South", Charleston, Aug. 6, 1868 to Major T. A. Nichols. In part: "...You will for the present continue discharging the duties heretofore assigned to you...All disbursements...you will look to Bvt. Maj. Gen. Canby, for the necessary approval...subsequent to my taking charge will be signed by me, on being sent or brought to Hd. Qrs. at Atlanta..." He also instructs that payments requiring immediate action should be referred to a Lt. Col. Cogswell. Light offsetting, else very good. The third Military District comprised almost all of the old Confederacy. Originally commanded by General John Pope, after his removal by President Andrew Johnson on December 28, 1867, Meade took his place. He served at the current location of Fort McPherson until August 1868 after Alabama and Florida were re-admitted into the United States.
