Description:

GEORGE E. PICKETT
(1825 - 1875) Confederate major general who formed the brigades for the ill-fated charge on the final day at Gettysburg. Pickett never forgave Lee for the destruction of his command and died a bitter man. Very rare war-date L.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., ' Hd. Qrs. Div.' May 13 [n.y.], to A.A.G. Capt. J. W. Reilly. Capt. John W. Reilly was a Virginian and a staff officer who also served under Gen. Gilbert Moxley Sorrel. In full: I send by one of my couriers a document for [General Gilbert M.] Sorrel will you please give it to your expressman who goes up tomorrow to be delivered immediately. Have you any news? Very truly yours, G. E. Pickett' A few trivial toned spots, else very good. Serving under Longstreet, Sorrel was promoted to major on June 24, 1862, and to lieutenant colonel on June 18, 1863 - likely this was written to Rielly in 1863 - weeks before Gettysburg - as it is doubtful Pickett would have been sending such an important document to a major.
