GEORGE CROOK
(1830 - 1890) Union major general and Indian fighter who was forced to retreat by Sioux and Cheyenne led by Crazy Horse at Rosebud Creek, denying Custer reinforcements at Little Big Horn. Crook was later engaged in the search for Geronimo. Manuscript L.S. 2pp. 4to., Chicago, Jan. 9, 1889, on ‘Headquarters Division of the Missouri' letterhead to President Benjamin Harrison. In part: ‘…With reference to the vacancy which by operation of law will take place by the retirement of the present head of the Quartermaster Department, General [Samuel B.] Holabird, I most respectfully endorse…General Charles H. Tompkins…'. With a lengthy A.E.S. on the verso by ALFRED H. TERRY (1827 - 1890) Union brigadier general at First Bull Run, Petersburg and Richmond, he was also commander of the expedition leading to George Custer's death at the Little Big Horn. In part: ‘…I respectfully beg leave to join in the within recommendation of General Crook. General Tompkins served with me as Chief Quartermaster of the Department of Dolato when I was in command…'. Glue stains to the left margin, otherwise very good.
