Description:

GEORGE CLINTON
(1739 - 1812) Vice President of the United States under Jefferson and Madison, Continental Congressman who opposed ratification of the Constitution. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, [n.d. due to paper loss, but like as Vice President], to lawyer and politician Ambrose Spencer (1765-1848) congratulating him on his wedding. In part: '...I most sincerely felicitate you on your marriage with my amiable niece, for whom I entertain the warmest affection, and pray that your union may be attended with all possible happiness...I enclose you a law enacted yesterday laying an embargo on our vessels with the message and papers on which it was predicted...' Large paper loss to the top right affecting text has been replaced with period paper, slight toning and stained. Spencer married Clinton's niece Mary (1773-1808) who died shortly after their union. She was the daughter of his brother James Clinton, and sister to future New York governor Dewitt Clinton.
