GEORGE CLINTON
(d. 1761) Colonial Governor of New York, later becoming an admiral in the British Navy. Father of Sir Henry Clinton (1738 - 1795). Fine content manuscript D.S. as Governor of New York, 1p. legal folio, New York, May 9, 1748 to Sir WILLIAM JOHNSON then serving as "Col: of the New Levies employ'd for the Protection & Defence [sic] of the Northern Frontier and the Annoyance of the Enemy..." detailing the pay for "...20 fitt [sic] Men belonging to the Forces now Imployed... at 6 pence Each Man pr Day over and above their present Pay, as also for 10 fitt Men of the Inhabitants of the county of Albany, at 3 shillings each man pr. Day... to be joined to the sad 20 Men to Range and Scour the Woods form the Town of Stone Raby [Stone Arabia] on the Mohawks River, for the Protection of the Inhabitants of the Out Settlements... You are therefore ordered... to Detach 20 Men of the said Forces not Posted in the Township of Stone Raby, together with 10 Men of the Inhabitant of the County of Albany... upon the above Service... for the Protection of the Inhabitants...against the Sculking Parties of the Enemy..." With integral address leaf. Signed in the final year of King George's War (The War of Austrian Succession in Europe). During that conflict, Johnson organized small parties to harass the French and their Indian allies, and made liberal use of New York's Scalp Act of 1747 paying bounties for scalps. A fine piece signed the same year that William Johnson (1715-1774) had built Fort Johnson which became the site of numerous conferences between Johnson and the Iroquois. Usual folds with a minor separation at top, light toning, else very good condition.
