Description:

GEORGE C. STRONG
(1832 - 1863) Union major general, commanded an expedition against Biloxi, Mississippi, in April 1862, and another sent against Ponchatoula. At the battle of Fort Wagner, Strong was in command of the brigade which included Col. Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts. Wounded in the engagement, he would die of disease twelve days after the battle. Very rare war-date A.L.S. "Geo. C. Strong" written just weeks before assuming his last command, 3pp. 8vo., New York, Apr. 7, 1863 to "My. dear Col.". As he recuperates from an illness, Strong shares news with his old friend, first congratulating the man upon a promotion which Strong had learned of that morning. He continues: "...I suppose you will now make out a new requisition for quarters...Burnsides' will not be any too good...". Strong mentions the happy position of Gen. George Shepley, then military governor of Louisiana, and Gen. William H. French, commanding Harpers Ferry, and scolds them: "Damn the man that forsakes his friends". He teases: "[Godfrey] Weitzel, myself, and three or four of our original Colonels are Brigadiers...the articles make it a dismissable offense to say a word against you - therefore I forbear...My youngest son was buried...the next day after his birth...". Fine condition. Strong is nearly impossible to obtain in any form!
