(1826 – 1885) Union major general and general-in-chief of the army whose hesitation in attacking Confederate forces caused him to be sacked by Lincoln. Nice association A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 24, 1866, to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant defending an accusation that he had kept official army documents. In part: ‘...In a letter received yesterday from Genl. Marcy he says – ‘I had a note...in which...it had been officially reported...that McClellan had retained in his possession certain accounts pertaining to the Head Quarters of the Army, which were [sent] to him while preparing his Report in 1862-63.' I desire to state that I have not knowingly retained or caused to withhold any document whatever, whether important or unimportant...When my report was completed I caused all the original subordinate reports and all other documents belonging to the US Government to be boxed up and sent then to the Adj. Genl...my recollection is that they were sent by the hands of my aide-de-camp...I shall be under official obligation to you, General, if you will cause me to be informed what documents are alluded to in the report referred to, also by whom that report was made to you...' Signed at the conclusion. Inlaid onto 4to. stock. Chipping at the left and bottom margins, else very good. Sold with an engraving of McClellan in uniform.
