Description:

GEORGE B. MCCLELLAN
(1826 - 1885) Union major general and general-in-chief of the army whose hesitation in attacking Confederate forces caused him to be sacked by Lincoln. Fine content war-date A.D.S. penned at the conclusion of the text of a military telegram sent to him by Major Gen. JOHN A. DIX (1798-1879), 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 24, 1861. Dix has written from Baltimore advising that Gen. Henry H. Lockwood had taken Accomac, Va. He continues: '...The People of Accomac [Accomack County] have already called a meeting to advise as to the best mode of coming back into the Union. I shall send copies of his dispatches tonight. Will you speak to the President & the Secy. of the Treasury in regard to reopening trade with Accomac & Northampton...Prompt action will expedite the restoration of these counties to the Union...' At the conclusion, McClellan pens and signs a response to be sent back to Dix: 'I beg to express my full approval of the suggestions of Genl. Dix & the hope that his Excellency will order the opening of trade at the earliest possible moment. Respectfully, Geo. B. McClellan, Maj. Genl.' Fine condition. Accomack and Northampton counties, bot1h in Virginia and laying on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, were effectively cut-off from the Confederacy by land and by the Union blockade. Ten days earlier, On Nov. 14, Lockwood circulated a proclamation to Virginians on the Shore on behalf of Maj. Gen. Dix. The opening sentence said it all, plain and to the point: 'The Military Forces of the United States are about to enter your Counties...it sends among you a force too strong to be successfully opposed.' Dix assured residents, 'who remain in the quiet pursuit of their domestic occupations,' that they would not be disturbed by federal troops or federal rule. The Confederates wisely withdrew, but local sympathizers would run the Union blockade for the rest of the war.
