Description:

GEORGE B. BOOMER
(1832-1863) Union colonel in 26th Missouri Vols, served under Pope and killed in action at Vicksburg, prior to which he participated in many major battles. During the Vicksburg Campaign, Boomer commanded the 3rd Brigade of Gen. Quinby's division of the McPherson corps at the battle of Champion Hills, with conspicuous gallantry, and was recommended for promotion. Rare war-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Helena, Mar. 18, 1863, writing to JAMES B. MCPHERSON (1828-1864), Union major general who fought in Grant's Tennessee campaigns, led the right wing at Vicksburg, and was killed in battle at Atlanta. In part: ‘…I have taken the responsibility to open your dispatch to Genl. Quinby. He left Saturday with the first Brigade and left me here in Command of the other two and Batteries with instructions to come on as fast as possible. I have but one Boat. There is little prospect of more. Genl. Smith is here also with no transportation. Ross had had a fight on the Gun Boats here at Greenwood. They had not yet driven the enemy out. It is a question of vital importance whether we shall have transportation immediately and sufficient in quantity or not. I shall forward your dispatches to Gen. Quinby by a dispatch Boat from Helena tomorrow and shall embark the moment boats arrive…' This letter makes mention of General Isaac Quinby, who at the time was sending reinforcements for the Yazoo Pass expedition, which was part of the Anaconda Plan to take the Mississippi. Lightly stained with tape residue and a small tear on the right margin, otherwise very good.
