GEORGE A. CUSTER
(1839 - 1876) Union major general of cavalry who fought in nearly every battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Gettysburg, and later met his tragic end at the hands of Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the battle of Little Big Horn. Civil War-date A.D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., "Headquarters 3rd Div. Cav", Dec. 8, 1864. Just days before the battle at Cedar Creek and undoubtedly on the move without his supplies, Custer orders: "The Commissary of the 1st Brig. is authorized to issue to the bearer (50) fifty pounds of salt". Signed "G.A. Custer Bvt. Maj Genl Comg 3rd Div". Moderate mounting traces on verso, previous owner's docket to lower right corner, light staining in areas, overall very good. According to our consignor, this piece was used to provide an example of Custer's handwriting for Charles Hamilton's noted book, The Signature of America.
