(1839 - 1876) Union major general of cavalry who fought in nearly every battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Gettysburg, and later met his tragic end at the hands of Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the battle of Little Big Horn. Rare war-date A.L.S. 1p. 12mo., Sept. 11, 1863, in full: "Reply forwarded by the Examining Board recommended Attention requested to enclosed extract from proceedings of this Board in care of Capt. Carey. G. Custer Brig Genl Vols Presdt. of Ex Board". Beautifully matted in brown linen with a reproduction photograph, and set into a gilt frame. Fine condition, not examined out of frame.
