GEORGE A. CUSTER, WESLEY MERRITT AND ALFRED TORBERT
PETER STAGG (1836-1884) Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as an officer in the 1st Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, which was part of General George A. Custer's famed ‘Wolverine Brigade.' He eventually rose to colonel and commander of the regiment and was the last man to command the Wolverine Brigade. War-date A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Headquarters 1st Michigan Cavalry, Aug. 29, 1864, in part: ‘…I have the honor to request a leave of absence for twenty days, on account of disability... The surgeon's certificate goes on to state that Stagg has chronic diarrhea. The verso bears a forwarding A.E.S. GEORGE A. CUSTER (1839-1876) ‘G. A. Custer', Union major general of cavalry who fought in nearly every battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Gettysburg, and later met his tragic end at the hands of Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the battle of Little Big Horn, a forwarding E.S. by WESLEY MERRITT (1834-1910) ‘W. Merritt', Union major general of cavalry who fought at Gettysburg, Culpeper, and rode with Sheridan on raids to Richmond and Yellow Tavern, and a forwarding E.S. by ALFRED T. A. TORBERT (1833-1880) ‘A. T. A. Torbert', Union brigadier general who led at Yorktown, Antietam and Gettysburg, briefly headed Army of the Shenandoah, and wounded at South Mountain.
