Description:

GEN. RICHARD W. JOHNSON AND THE 49TH OHIO ARE CAPTURED WITH THEIR GUNS UNLOADED
Fine content letter from Sgt. David M. Wynn, Co. B, 49th Ohio, 4pp. 8vo., Camp Parole, Md., Mar. 3, 1863. Wynn sets forth the embarrassing and ignorant actions of his superior officers which directly led to his capture at Stones River. In part (phonetic spelling corrected): "...I cannot relate the travel that we have done since we was taken prisoner...1,950 miles...our brigade was on the extreme right of the 32nd Ind. and the 39th Ind. those regiments were on picket and our general was old [Brig. Gen. Richard W.] Johnson...was some of the boys said they seen him shake his handkerchief [to surrender]...the evening before our Brigadier General went to old Johnson and asked him if the Brigade should load their pieces and the old fellow scraped him of as short as he could. He told our Brigadier General that he was in command...and he should go to his quarters and he would send him word when he should load and we was ordered to lay on our arms and not one of them was loaded...not a gun in thge brigade was loaded...the boys was off getting water to make them some coffee and the Rebs charged on us...the reserve did not have their guns loaded...the Rebs pecking it to them as hard as they could...the flag bearer got his leg shot off and there he stood and held the flag until their marching columns was past it...the Rebs came up to the batteries and said 'Hurrah for Texas' and thene there was a volley of lead...seemed to fall thicker than the drops of rain from the heavens in a time of storm...". Some toned spots, else very good.
