Description:

JAMES HAMILTON (1742 - 1803) British general who fought in the invasion of Canada and the Battle of Freeman's Farm, commanding the middle column during the latter. He was in the Convention Army, imprisoned in Cambridge, Massachusetts after its surrender following the battle of Saratoga. Important A.D.S. 'James Hamilton Brigdr. Genl.', 3pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d. c. 1777], entitled 'Names of the British Officers' listing general staff as well as officers of the Royal Artillery, Canadian Corps, 9th, 20th, 21st, 24th, 30th, 33rd, and 47th Regiments, all of whom were captured at Saratoga. The top officers in each regiment do not rank higher than lieutenant colonel as most of the superior officers had likely been paroled. In all, Hamilton lists forty nine officers as present. Folds, last page bears vertical fold separation which affects signature and is rather clumsily repaired on verso, otherwise very good.
