Description:

GEN. JAMES GAVIN COMMENDS THE 504TH P.I.R. AND 82ND AIRBORNE
A fine pair of war-date printed commendations issued by Gen. JAMES GAVIN (1907-1990), American general and commander of the 82nd Airborne at Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. Gavin's first notice, G.O. 43, 1p. 4to., Mar. 23, 1945 recognizes the 504th P.I.R.'s brave defense of Cheneux, Belgium on the preceding Dec. 20-21 against a vastly superior force of Waffen-SS supported by armor. The 504 attacked the Germans in three waves, taking heavy losses and even using clubbed rifles and bayonets. Ultimately, they destroyed five companies of SS troops. The second notice, signed in facsimile, is 1p. 4to., dated Jan. 10, 1945 and was issued to 'Troopers of the 82nd Airborne Division'. In it, Gavin commends the 82nd on relieving St. Vith and stopping the German 1st SS Panzer Division spearhead, and later destroying the 62nd Volksgrenadier Div. Both pages ar evenly toned with some marginal tears and chips yet still overall very good.
