GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S 'WAR DIARIES' NOTE PAD HOLDER AND MECHANICAL PENCILS (3)
FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) German general and the chief of staff of the Army High Command (OKH) from 1938-1942. He directed the planning and implementation of Operation Barbarossa, the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union. An important set of Halder relics, to include the brass notepad holder within which Halder recorded his historic war diaries. The brass notepad holder measures 2.5 x 4 in. with a flip-up front cover deorated with the brass plate from a belt buckle with the phrase 'Gott Mit Uns'. The original short hand diary which Halder made during the war was penned within this notepad, and those notes would form the basis of the famous Halder Diaries. The original notes removed from this notepad are in the collection of John Hopkins University in Baltimore. Accompanying the notepad holder is a period sterling silver mechanical pencil which also belonged to Halder, bearing a twisted barrel and a retaining ring for a chain at top and very likely used by him to record his war diaries. A postwar Cross mechanical pencil also owned by the general is included as well. Three pieces.
