Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S STUDY OF GERMAN ORGANIZATION ON THE EASTERN FRONT NEAR WAR'S END
An extraordinary historic typed document, approx. 203pp. 4to., originating from the personal files of German General FRANZ HALDER (1884-1972), Chief of Staff of the German ‘Oberkommando des Heeres' (OKH), or Army High Command, from 1938 until his removal in 1942. The document, a report authored by Colonel Hans-Adolf von Blumroder, is a comprehensive case study of German military organization on the Eastern Front during the closing stages of the Second World War. Written very shortly after the war as part of the German officer interrogations and studies program overseen by General Halder, it reflects both first-hand operational experience and a systematic effort to document the structure, functioning, and difficulties of German divisions in 1944–1945. The report documents the condition and organization of German divisions on the Eastern Front in 1944–1945. It explains how divisions were formally structured but in practice reduced to fragments; how chronic shortages of men, weapons, fuel, and supplies undermined operations; and how ad-hoc formations and improvisation became the norm. It stresses the widening gap between paper strength and battlefield reality, the attrition of morale, and the logistical collapse that crippled mobility and firepower. At the same time, it acknowledges the continued discipline, adaptability, and professionalism of German staffs and junior leaders. In essence, the report provides a detailed narrative of how the German Army tried to maintain divisional organization under the crushing pressure of the Soviet offensives, capturing both the resilience and the disintegration of the Wehrmacht in its final Eastern campaigns. The ‘Halder Group', consisting of over 700 German officers overseen by Halder, produced over 2,500 documents for the U.S. Army Historical Division, providing valuable military intelligence and analysis of the course of the war and, in particular, the tactics utilized by the Red Army. These provided a vital resource guiding American military policy in response to the Soviet threat during the Cold War. In a period binder, very good.
