Description:

GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S POSTER OFFERS CONGRATULATIONS ON THE FALL OF FRANCE
FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972) German general and the chief of staff of the Army High Command (OKH) from 1938-1942. He directed the planning and implementation of Operation Barbarossa, the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union. Printed poster from the estate of Gen. Franz Halder, 11.75 x 15.75 in., depicts masses of German soldiers marching into France and bearing the message: 'The General Staff officers of the 6th Army, during a journey to the battlefields of the Loire, commemorate with unwavering loyalty and reverence the Chief of the General Staff of the Army in January 1941'. At bottom appear the signatures in facsimile of approx. 22 staff officers. Very good. As Chief of the German General Staff, Halder was central to planning the 1940 invasion of France (Fall Gelb), initially proposing a broad frontal push through Belgium, but later sidelined as Hitler adopted Manstein's audacious Ardennes breakthrough, a plan Halder initially opposed as too risky. This poster was printed for the benefit of Gen. WALTER VON REICHENAU who commanded the 6th Army in its invasion of France, as well as during Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia.
